Is BIS certification mandatory for every product?
No. BIS certification is generally voluntary unless the Government has made compliance compulsory for a particular product through applicable regulations/QCOs or other notifications.
How do I know if my product requires BIS certification?
The requirement depends on the specific product, applicable Indian Standard and government notification/QCO. BIS maintains an official list of products under compulsory certification.
What is the difference between BIS and ISI?
BIS is the standards/certification organisation. ISI Mark is the Standard Mark used under the applicable Scheme I product certification framework.
Do imported products require BIS?
Some imported products are subject to mandatory BIS requirements. The applicable requirement depends on the product and notification. Foreign manufacturers may use the applicable BIS route, including FMCS for relevant non-electronic/IT products.
Is factory inspection required?
It depends on the certification scheme and product. Under Scheme I, BIS describes assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, process controls, quality control and testing capabilities as part of the licensing process.
